Wednesday- Do 7,1, 7.1, and 7.3 Study Guides in class and the three practice sheets at home.

Thursday- Take Quiz A and Quiz B in class and give time for questions before a test on Friday.

Friday. Chapter 7 Test (First three sections only) Homework Read Section 5.1 Define vocab, copy each example and do the first 20 problems.

November16-20

Review Chapter 3 all week long. This is the most foundational chapter in the entire Algebra course. Solving equations is going to be showing up in Geometry and Advanced Algebra on a regular basis. We will do each of the sections through the week and by Friday we will finish the chapter. There will be a test next Tuesday November 24th for practice and a test on Wednesday that will count.

Algebra 1 November 9-13

Monday. Quiz over 3.1 and 3.2 Assign reading, note, vocabulary, copy examples, and do #1-30 odd for sections 3.3 and 3.4.

Tuesday Do Study Guides on 3.3 and 3.4 as a class outloud. Do Practice sheets 3.3 and 3.4- start in class and finish for homework. At home- Read, Notes, Vocabulary, Examples from 3.5

Wednesday Quiz over 3.2 and 3.4. Do 3.5 Study Guide with a partner. Do 3.5 Practice as a class and finish at home.

Thursday Read 3.6 as a class. Do 3.6 Study Guide as a class. Practice 3.6 for HW. Review Chapter 3 for Assessment Test on Friday

Friday Chapters 1,2,3 Assessment. Homework. 3.7 Follow normal procedure.

Marking period ends on Friday. Binders need to be in order. Flash Cards can still be made for extra credit.

October 26-30

Monday- Finish chapter 2.6 to 2.8 (Turn in Ben Carson/"Gifted Hands" Paper)

Tuesday- Review Quizzes A, B, C, D- go over answers and questions that students have to prepare for their test. For homework tonight do the practice test at the back of chapter 2 on page 133.

Wednesday- Practice Test on Chapter 2

Thursday- Chapter 2 Test, Collect Binders, Give students a reading assignment on Chapter 3.1 and assign vocabulary, practice problems from 3.1

Friday- Begin Chapter 3 - Solving Equations (This is the most important component of the Algebra 1 Course and it must be mastered to be successful in Geometry next year"

This is the last week of the marking period. The "Gifted Hands" paper, which is 3 paragraphs on how the student can make changes in his/her individual lives using Dr. Ben Carson as a role model. The paper is intended to help students think about specific applications and changes that would help each one improve their quality of life as students. It also helps them think as they are planning for the future.

The Binder that will be collected should contain a pouch with 5 pencils, an eraser, a ruler, 100+ sheets of lined paper, and all of the assignments, notes, quizzes, tests, and handouts for the first 9 weeks of school. Each page needs to have Name, Date, Hour and Title. All papers are to be in order by DATE. The Binder is worth half a test grade. I strongly encourage parents to be involved in the "binder process" as many 9th grade students struggle with organizational skills.

Students are welcome to come after school every day for individual help. I will stay as long as a student needs. Students are encouraged to make multiplication flash cards and to review at home nightly. 50 extra credit points can be earned just for making the cards and a point per night can be earned by reviewing for 10 minutes or more, and then bringing me a note with a parent signature and date.

The first quarter of school we focused on chapters 1 and 2, which are foundational math subjects that are vital to a successful high school math experience. Students are allowed to retake tests if they do not perform well, but they must take the initiative and see me after school. Also during the first quarter a considerable amount of time was devoted to organizational and character issues that will greatly help the student be more successful in all of his/her classes.

Parents can contact me at 586-791-6300 ext. 2200. I will do anything that will help your child improve in not only math, but any area that impacts their high school learning experience. Very few students stay after school or retake tests. I encourage each parent to talk to their student about this. Also, it is a good idea to ask them to show you their binders on a regular basis so that you can see whether or not they are staying organized and doing work. If your child has not made flash cards, please talk with them regarding this. Not only can they get extra credit but daily reviewing of their multiplication tables is one of the best things that they can do to improve math skills.

October 5-9

Here is the first blog post of the year for those that would like to follow the activities and lesson plans for Mr. Marshall's Algebra and Algebra Lab classes. Often the work in both classes will be similar, but the big difference between the two is the lab provides more than just math. Provided in the lab are many of the skills that are needed and often lacking for students to have a very successful and fullfilling experience here at Clintondale High School.

This week we finished up the movie about Ben Carson, called Gifted Hands. You might ask what this movie has to do with math and I strongly encourage you to get the DVD and watch it. Ben Carson came from our area. He grew up in Detroit and had a very difficult life. He couldn't do his multiplication flash cards in middle school and his reading skills were very poor. Today he is the world's greatest Neurosurgeon. The students had to take notes on the film and will write a paper. Also they can get extra credit if they watch it with their family. Without motivation, many students struggle with math as it requires a great deal of concentration and repetition. "Gifted Hands" is a great motivator.

All of my students can get 50 points extra credit if they make flash cards and bring them in and show me. They then can get a point a day if they review at home and bring a signed note from a parent or guardian.

All students got 50 points for having their supplies. Many still need to buy a three ring binder, 5 pencils, an eraser, a ruler, 150 sheets of lined paper (no spiral notebooks allowed as they are "messy" and leave a negative image), and a pouch that has three holes to hold their pencils and eraser.

If a student has a low progress report grade it can be raised in a hurry with just taking care of the above assignments.

This week we are working on all of chapter one in their Algebra textbook. Worksheets in the form of study guides and practice sheets for sections one through eight have been handed out. A practice test will be given on Thursday and a real test on Friday.

I stay after school every single day for usually an hour to help students that want tutoring. This needs to be taken advantage of. It is free and is the best way for some students to get the one on one time that they need.

Also I usually tell my students to proof read all they write and then to have someone else read it as well. I am breaking that rule when I hit "Post" as I don't have time to have Mrs. Marshall,(English teacher!!) at my side right now to read and fix my mistakes. But then the message there may be that we are all a "work in progress".

April 6 to April 10 Algebra D Marshall

Monday April 6 A Full test over chapter 9 without notes. This test will take the entire hour. Those with a two hour math class will have time to go over Friday's homework Study Guide 10.1 and the notes, vocab, examples and #1-#15 from the book. Homework will be to do the 10.1 Practice Handout

Tuesday- Pass back the Chapter 9 Test. Go over mistakes and have students make corrections. Discuss after-school retake test that is always available to any student that would like to relearn material and bring their grade up. We will then go over Prime Factoring from Chapter 10-1 Questions will be addressed and students will put problems on the board. Chapter 10-2 will be introduced and students will first read 10-2 and then take notes. Vocab will be defined. Examples will be put into their own words and then 1-15 from the textbook will be done. For homework, the student will do Chapter 10-2 Study Guide

Wednesday- Discuss homework. See if there are any questions. Have students work on 10-2 practice sheet and then a quiz will be given on 10-1 to 10-2. After the quiz 10-3 will be introduced and this will be the last section covered before Easter break. For homework students need to do the normal assignment of reading 10-3, defining vocab, copying examples in own words and doing 10-3 problems 1-15. The Chapter 10-3 Study Guide will be sent home with the student. They will take a brief quiz on Thursday.

Thursday, April 9- Before the quiz students will work on the 10-3 practice sheet and determine if there are any difficulties before taking a short quiz. After the practice sheet is done a Quiz on 10-3 will be given.

For homework over the Easter vacation- students should try and read ahead as much as possible. I understand that many students and their families have plans so there is no "official" homework, but reading section 10-4 and 10-5 and doing the normally assigned items would put them in a better place when they return. March 30- April 3 Algebra D Marshall

Monday. Review 9-1 to 9-4 Take a Quiz for Review Binders are do.

Tuesday. Review 9-5 to 9-7 Take a Quiz for Review Binders will be taken late but points will be lost

Wednesday. Go over 9-8 Review the foil method and then give Review problems for Test on Friday.

Thursday. Finish all of the 75 review problems and go over test problems and give help related to individual needs.

Friday April 3 Take a Test over Chapter 9-- Student is allowed to use all of his notes and study problems. A second test without notes will be given next Friday April 6

March 16 - March 20

Monday Review Chapter 8 Test. Go over answers and make sure that all questions related to Solving Systems of Equations are answered. Review Weekend homework- have all of 9.1 to 9.2 work organized and hand in. This means a minimum of 6 pages. Each section should include Student Notes, Vocabulary, Examples, and
Book Problems assigned. Also for each section is one Study Guide and one Practice Sheet, that each student receives in class.

Tuesday Students will work in pairs and take a quiz on 9.1 to 9.2. The 9.3 Study Guide should be done and will be collected on Wednesday.

Wednesday Retake of the 9.1,9.2 Quiz for reinforcement of positive and negative exponents. 9.3 Study Guide will be collected and graded and returned to the student. 9.3 Practice sheet will be done in class. 9.4 will be introduced and for homework the student should READ 9.4- take notes, define vocabulary, put examples into the student's own words and do problems 1-15 from the book.

Thursday Quiz on 9.3. Discuss and do problems on the board on 9.4. Students will then do practice problems on 9.4. Notebooks will be checked on Friday and need to be organized. At home Read and begin regular note taking, vocab etc. on 9.5

Friday. 9.1 to 9.4 mini test. Collect binders, checking for completed assignments and organization. Hand out 9.5 Study Guide and Practice Sheet. Begin working on assignment in class with one on one help and then for the weekend finish the 3 components of 9.5- Notes, Vocab, Examples, Problems.

March 9- March 13

On Monday, March 9 A practice Test of 8.1-8.4 was given

On Tuesday, March 10, A Final Test on Chapter 8 will be given

On Wednesday, March 11 Chapter 9.1 and 9.2 Will be introduced. Students need to have notes, vocabulary, examples and 1-15 in their binders. Study Guides for both sections will be handed out and must be done for homework.

On Thursday, March 12 Chapter 9.1 and 9.2 Practice Sheets will be done in class. A quiz will then be given. 9.3 will be introduced and the notes, vocab, examples and 1-15 problems need to be in their binders and 9.3 Study Guide will be sent home for homework.

On Friday, March 13 Chatper 9.3 Practice Sheets will be done together in class. . A 9.1-9.3 Quiz will be given. 9.4 Will be read together and normal note taking procedure should be followed. Study Guide for 9.4 ill be handed out for homework to be done over the weekend.

Over the weekend the students should review and have their binders in order so that they can be collected and graded on Monday. Also a practice test on 9.1 to 9.4 will be give so they need to study.

Monday finish 8-4. Take a quiz and give a practice set of problems to do at home.

Tuesday. Take a practice Test on Chapter 8.

Wednesday. Introduce Chapter 9 and do Read 9-1 together. Have students take notes, define vocabulary, copy examples in their own words, and do 1-15 from 9-1. Homework 9-1 Study Guide and 15-30 in book.

Thursday. Discuss issues from 9-1. Quiz on 9-1. Do practice sheet 9-1 in class. Hmework- read 9-2 and do the normal procedure that has been expected from every sections for the entire year. EVERY page goes in the students Binder.

Binders were inspected last week. Many students have not turned them in and it is not too late. Ask your student if they got a Binder grade.

Friday- Go over 9-2. Put problems on the board. Have students finish 9-2 Study Guide. Take a quiz on 9-2. Homework is to finish 9-2 Practice sheet and read and do normal procedure for 9-3.

Feb 23- Feb 27

This week will be spent on review Chapter 3- solving equations. If you cannot solve equations then you will struggle with graphing lines and finding points of intersection.

This week we will also review chapter 6- graphing linear equations. If you cannot graph one line then you will have a difficult time graphing two.

This week we will review 8-1 to 8-3. Many students need to do more problems. Practice and repetition makes the difference between knowing it for day, and knowing it for a lifetime.

By the week's end we will have finished chapter 8 and will be taking a test.

Finally the Been Carson movie "Gifted Hands" will be discussed and a paper written.

Tuesday Feb 17 Review 8.1 homework. Go over, in class, 3 worksheets in preparation for a retake of the chapter 6 test on graphing lines using Y=MX + B

Wednesday Feb 18 Take chapter 6 Test. Review 8.1, introduce 8.2 solving a system of equations using substitution. Handouts on 8.1 and 8.2 Notes on 8.1 and 8.2 should be done and in your binders. Examples should be written down in your own words. Vocab should be listed and described in your own words. First 15 problems from both sections should be started.

Thursday, Feb 19 Pass back the chapter 6 retake. Discuss issues. Go over 8.1 worksheets and explain 8.2 on how to solve a system of equations using substitution. After 8.2 you should be able to find the solution set for two lines by graphing and by substitution. Students will be putting problems on the board and solving. Questions will be addressed and a quiz on 8.1 and 8.2 will be given. For homework finish problems up through 30 on section 8.2 and complete 8.2 Study Guide

Friday, Feb 20 Go over quiz from yesterday. Offer retakes for those that studied. Do 8.2 Practice Sheet. Read 8.3 together in class and take notes, write down examples and define vocab in your own words. We will work through the study guide together and for homework 8.3 practice needs to be completed. Students need to now know how to solve systems of equations using a new method called Elimination using Addition and Subtraction. Problems 1-29 in your textbook need to be completed. Read ahead for Monday’s lesson on 8.4, which will be the last method we will look at to solve systems of equations. All together there are 4 methods and each one will give the same answer. Lean to observe which will work best in a given situation.

DO NOT FORGET- IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SET UP TUTORING WITH ME AND A PLAN OF ACTION FOR ANOTHER RETAKE OF ANY TEST OR QUIZ. LAST FRIDAY ONLY ONE PERSON CAME AFTER SCHOOL FOR HELP, EVEN THOUGH YOU KNEW A TEST WOULD BE GIVEN ON TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY.

Lesson Plans for February 2-6, 2009

Feb 2-Monday Finish 6-1 Practice sheet on finding slopes. Finish "Duck" Slope practice problem sheet. Take notes on 6-4 and learn how to put equations in slope-y intercept form. Do problems 1-10 in 6-4. Finish the practice sheet on solving equations that was handed out on Friday Jan 30. Take a quiz by the end of the hour. Notebooks with 5 pencils, a pouch, an eraser, and 50 sheets of lined college paper was due on Friday for 50 points. Today it is worth 40 and will go down 10 points each day. Assign problems 11-30 from Chapter 6 section 4.

Feb 3- Tuesday- Begin with a quesion answer time followed by a 6-4 and solving equation Quiz. Go over homework. Check notebooks for 30 points. Do two handouts together in class that help students learn to put linear equations into the form Y= MX +b (slope-intercept form). Collect one of the several homework assignments that have been given Monday and last Friday, for a grade. Do two practice handouts in class. Homework- Do practice sheet 6-4. Quiz on Wednesday

Feb 4- Wednesday- Quiz on Slope-intercept problems. Graphing lines included. Be able to find slope from lines. Be able to draw lines from equations and be able to put lines into equation form.
Review chapter 5 on the formula for linear equations AX+BY=C. Two more handouts in class and then for homework study for a test on Chapter 6 (FRIDAY). Notebooks-20 points

Feb 5-Thursday- Question answer time for Test on Chapter 6. Put problems on board for students to solve. Go over problems from 6-6 and do 1-30 (random samples together as a class) Take a practice chapter 6 Test. Notebooks- last day 10 points.

Feb 6- Friday- Take Chapter 6 test. Introduce Chapter 8-Solving Systems of equations. Read 8-1 together in class. Then have students take notes. Define Vocabulary. Copy for understanding the examples and do problems 1-0. Take 8-1 Chapter Study Guide home for homework. Quiz on Monday
